Before buying a $23 million mansion in Washington, the Meta CEO owned many expensive properties even though he used to live with his parents in his youth.
Humble start. In the early 1980s, Mark Zuckerberg’s parents bought a 110-square-foot house in Dobbs Ferry, a small village in Westchester County (New York state), about 30 minutes from Manhattan. Edward Zuckerberg, Mark’s father, opened a dental clinic at home. Living and doing business in the house inspired Mark to pursue his passion for technology. As a teenager, Mark developed “Zucknet”, a system that helped his father communicate between clinics. Property records show the house was sold in 2019. Currently, this place is still the clinic of another dentist. Photo: New York Times.

University dormitories. When he was a student at Harvard University, Zuckerberg lived in room H33 of the Kirkland House dormitory. This is the birthplace of Facebook, also nicknamed “Zuckerberg’s apartment” and mentioned in the movie The Social Network (2010). In 2017, Zuckerberg returned to visit his old residence. The room hasn’t changed much, except for the addition of a poster for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. In his youth, Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard to focus on building Facebook. Photo: Facebook.

Smart home. In 2016, Zuckerberg shared a video of the interior of the cabin in Palo Alto. The Facebook CEO called this a “smart house” when integrating an AI assistant named Jarvis, voiced by actor Morgan Freeman. Not only reminding Zuckerberg’s children of the day’s meeting schedule, the assistant also teaches Mandarin to Zuckerberg’s children, controls the laundry equipment and bakes bread. The house was purchased in 2011 for $7 million. He also bought four of his neighbors’ homes for a total of about $43 million. Photo: Meta.
Lake Tahoe. From 2018 to 2019, Zuckerberg spent $59 million to buy two 4-hectare plots of land on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. It is also an area that attracts many other tech billionaires, including Larry Ellison. In 2024, there are rumors that Zuckerberg has demolished a plot of land to build a new complex of 7 buildings. During the pandemic, the Facebook CEO discovered his preference for working from home. “I find that remote work gives me space for long-term thinking and more time with my family, which makes me happier and more productive,” he said in a message to employees. Photo: Google Earth.
Shelter in Hawaii. Since 2014, Zuckerberg has bought about 566 hectares of land on the island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. Construction activities create conflict with the local population. When the investigation was announced in 2023, it was widely reported that this was a shelter for the end of the world. Responding to Bloomberg, the Meta CEO admitted that the cellar exists, but it is only a “storage floor” and a “storm shelter”. Zuckerberg also uses the land for livestock, with the goal of “creating the best quality beef in the world”. Photo: New York Times.
The mansion is near the White House. Zuckerberg’s latest home is worth $23 million, about a 10-minute drive from the White House. Located in Woodland Normanstone, an affluent neighborhood in northwest Washington, the house consists of 3 villas connected by an elevated glass walkway. Designed by architect Robert Gurney, the house has a modern look but retains some traditional features such as red bricks and a pointed roof. This place is also guaranteed security with a 3.6 m high iron fence, a large gate surrounding the parking lot. Photo: New York Times.
According to Politico, this is the third most expensive home sale in Washington history. As soon as the deal was finalized in early March, images of the house were blurred on Google Maps. Photo: New York Times.
