Whoopi Goldberg, 67, speaks out about being ‘retired’ as The View fans speculate she will soon leave the daytime talk show

Whoopi Goldberg has addressed rumors that she will soon retire from her longtime gig as a co-host on daytime talk show The View.

The Ghost icon, 67, spoke to The Sun as the guest of honor at FGI’s annual Night of Stars gala earlier this week.

‘I’ve done nothing but retire. I’ve been retired my whole career,’ Whoopi joked of her career trajectory.

‘So, I kind of like that,’ she added.

Her contract permits her to take off on Fridays – allowing her co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sara Haines (all pictured) to take the reins once weekly

The famed entertainer also alluded to the fact that her contract has long allowed her to take Fridays off, with her co-hosts – Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro, Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sara Haines – taking the reins in her weekly absence.

‘I have a contract. As long as I’m doing the contract, nobody’s mad,’ she said.

‘But I’ve been off on Fridays for years now because when we did that normally, I’d go to work and do shows or do whatever because I could travel on a Friday.’

In 2021, it was reported that Whoopi is contracted to stay on with The View until the summer of 2024.

She is said to be paid $8 million annually for the four day per week co-hosting gig.

Prior to accepting the FGI’s American Icon Award at Tuesday’s gala, Whoopi had been on a trip to Rome, where she came face to face with the Pope.

In her acceptance speech, she gushed of the encounter.

‘Listen, I was with the Pope the other day, and I said to Francis, “I’m going to get this award.” And he said, “Bless you.”

‘So I am going to get this award that he gave me, and I’m sending it out to all of you so that you can send it out to other people,’ she continued.

‘And you too can say, “I was with Francis the other day.”‘

The papal anecdote seemingly dovetailed with the fact that Whoopi is hard at work on Sister Act 3 – the third installment of the original 1992 hit comedy.

‘Sister Act is coming and I want to get that up and out… It’ll be interesting,’ Whoopi added to The Sun.
