In a twist that has fans fired up and social media ablaze, Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham has responded after receiving a fine from the WNBA—for what she claims was nothing more than defending rookie sensation Caitlin Clark.
The incident occurred during a tense matchup earlier this week when an opposing player appeared to throw a hard elbow at Clark during a transition play. Before referees could react, Cunningham stepped in physically—putting herself between Clark and the aggressor, and exchanging heated words in the process.
The moment, caught on camera, went viral instantly.
Fans dubbed Cunningham “The Bodyguard” and praised her for standing up for her teammate. But just two days later, the WNBA announced it had fined Cunningham for “escalating on-court conflict.”
Now, the fiery guard is clapping back—and she’s not holding anything back.
“So I get fined for protecting someone who’s been targeted all season? Got it,” Cunningham posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“If standing up for my teammate costs me money, I’ll pay it every time.”
That post alone has garnered over 500,000 views and counting. Her name trended on social media overnight as fans rushed to support her.
“Cunningham has more guts than half the league,” one user wrote. “She’s not just playing basketball—she’s protecting the culture.”
In a follow-up interview with reporters after practice, Cunningham stood by her actions.
“Caitlin’s been taking hits all season,” she said. “If no one else is going to step in, I will. This league needs to decide if it wants to grow or punish the players actually showing passion.”
Clark herself briefly addressed the situation, thanking Cunningham for having her back.
“It means a lot. She didn’t have to do that, but she did. That’s leadership,” Clark said.
Indiana Fever head coach Christy Sides also defended Cunningham.
“Sophie brings heart, intensity, and protection. I’ll take that kind of fine over a quiet bench any day,” Sides told media.
Still, the league stands by its decision. In a short statement, the WNBA said:
“While we appreciate the importance of team unity, physical escalation—regardless of intent—will not be overlooked. Player safety is a top priority.”
But Cunningham’s supporters say the league is missing the point.
“The WNBA finally has rivalries and fire—don’t kill it with technicalities,” said a former player on a popular podcast.
The fine amount has not been officially disclosed, but sources suggest it’s in the $1,000–$2,500 range.
Fans are now rallying to cover the cost themselves. One supporter launched a crowdfunding page titled “FUND THE BODYGUARD” to help Cunningham pay the fine. In less than 12 hours, the campaign raised over $7,000—far beyond the initial goal.
Despite the noise, Cunningham remains focused on the season ahead. When asked if she’d do anything differently, her answer was short and sharp:
“Not a damn thing.”
The Fever are surging in attention, ratings, and rivalry. And while Clark may be the spotlight, it’s Cunningham who’s emerging as the team’s muscle, heart, and vocal leader.
One thing is clear: Cunningham may have taken the fine—but she won the fans.
And as the Fever prepare for their next big showdown, every eye will be watching the duo of Clark and Cunningham.
One’s the star. The other’s the shield.
