In a raw and revealing moment that stunned viewers, Oscar-winning actress and The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg has admitted she never loved any of the three men she married — and says her motivation for walking down the aisle was never love, but a desire to “feel normal.”
Appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight, the Ghost star — known for her tough wit and candid takes — opened up about her complicated past with marriage. “I think you’re supposed to be in love with the person you marry. You’re supposed to be devoted to them. And I just wasn’t,” she confessed. “I never had that devotion.”
Goldberg, now 55, has been married three times — to Alvin Martin in 1973, David Claessen in 1986, and Lyle Trachtenberg in 1994. None of the unions lasted more than a few years, with the third crumbling in less than 12 months. While many fans had long speculated about Goldberg’s resistance to traditional romance, few expected such a blunt admission from the star herself.
She went on to say that the decision to marry each time stemmed from social pressure, not emotional connection. “I just wanted to feel normal,” she said. “But I realized very quickly — I’m not someone who’s built for marriage.”
Despite her lack of romantic attachment to her former husbands, Goldberg emphasized that she has always been deeply committed to her family and personal circle. But romantic devotion, she says, was never part of those marriages. “It was never love,” she said plainly.
Yet in a twist no one saw coming, Goldberg admitted that she did fall in love once — just not with anyone she married. “There was one man I loved,” she said, her tone shifting. “He wasn’t famous. Just a regular man.” According to Goldberg, their connection was strong and meaningful, but it wasn’t meant to last. The man eventually married someone else — but the bond between them remains. “We’re still very close,” she revealed. “We’re friends.”
Goldberg’s comments have sparked widespread reaction on social media, with fans praising her honesty and calling her confession a powerful example of someone owning their truth. “Whoopi is a legend because she doesn’t pretend,” one fan posted. “She’s real, raw, and not afraid to go against expectations.”
In a world obsessed with fairy-tale romances and happily-ever-afters, Goldberg’s blunt perspective offers a different narrative — one that rejects the idea that love and marriage must go hand-in-hand. As she said herself, “Maybe I’m just not wired for it. And I’m okay with that now.”
Whoopi Goldberg continues to live life on her own terms — and in doing so, gives others permission to do the same.
