Rep. Jasmine Crockett Officially Enters Race to Lead House Oversight Committee
On June 3, 2025, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic leadership position on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, following the departure of Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) in May. If elected, Crockett would become the top Democrat on the 47-member committee, and could potentially assume the role of Chairman if Democrats regain the House majority in the 2026 midterm elections.

In a letter to her Democratic colleagues, Crockett emphasized: “The American people are demanding a more strategic, aggressive, and energetic fight. With that urgency, I am formally announcing my candidacy for the Democratic leadership position on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee how the House governs — with a focus on protecting American families, defending the Constitution and the rule of law, and ensuring that government serves the people, not the elite.”

Crockett, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, has said that if elected to serve as the Democratic leader on the Oversight Committee, she would “absolutely” push for an impeachment inquiry into President Trump, underscoring her commitment to monitoring the president’s conduct and ensuring accountability.

Crockett joins a competitive race with Reps. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) and Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) to succeed Connolly. The Democratic primary is scheduled for June 24.
The race reflects the internal debate within the Democratic Party over strategy and leadership, especially across generations and political persuasions. While some members worry that pursuing impeachment could galvanize Republican voters, others, including Crockett, believe that drastic action is necessary to protect democracy and the rule of law.
Jasmine Crockett, born in 1981 in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American lawyer and politician. She worked as a public defender and civil rights attorney before being elected to the United States House of Representatives representing Texas’ 30th district in 2023. She is a member of the Democratic Party and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
Jasmine Crockett’s announcement of her candidacy for the House Oversight Committee Democratic Leadership position marks a significant step forward in her political career and reflects a shift in the Democratic Party’s strategy and leadership. The upcoming election will be a test of the party’s future direction in overseeing government and defending democratic values.
